Summer Book Study on Being Mortal, by Atul Gawande

Sundays, July 2 - August 13, 9:00 a.m.

Medicine has triumphed in modern times, transforming injury and illness from harrowing to manageable. But when it comes to the inescapable realities of aging and death, the goals of medicine seem to frequently run counter to the interest of the human spirit. Through eye-opening research and gripping stories of his own patients and family, Atul Gawande reveals the suffering this dynamic has produced, arguing that quality of life is the desired goal for patients and families. Gawande offers examples of more socially fulfilling care models, and he demonstrates that a person’s last weeks or months may be rich and dignified.

Megan Hoskins, our director of formation, will lead a 6-week discussion group based on Being Mortal on Sunday mornings from July 2 – August 13. The group will meet in the church office from 9 – 10 a.m.  For more information, contact Megan Hoskins.

First Friday Grill & Chill

August 4, 6:00 p.m. (or whenever)

The grill will be lit, so bring something to throw on, maybe a side to share, and your choice of drink. There's no agenda, we'll just hang out in the back yard, or, if you prefer, play on the playground. The grill will be ready about 6:00 p.m. We'll have tables and benches, but you are welcome to bring a camp chair as well. Come relax with friends, or make some new friends. All are welcome!

Parish Lunch Line

On the third Sunday of every month, we gather in the parish kitchen to make sandwiches for clients of Northern Virginia Family Service's Bailey's Crossroads shelter. After our 10:00 a.m. service, we work for about 45 minutes to assemble and package sandwiches with the supplies we have on hand. All are welcome to come help out for as much time as you can spare. We are always accepting donations of lunch meat, cheese, and bread.
